Wine Notes: (Local RE and Wine News)

Harvest Festival and Crush

Crush is in full swing.  Whites grapes and early red grapes are well along in fermentation now.  Later red grapes are being harvested and most will be complete by mid October.  Just in time for Paso Robles Harvest Weekend October 17- 19th.
Harvest Weekend is not the time for large group events and tastings,  but an opportunity to enjoy the lovely autumn weather and explore all the great wineries of the area.  There seem to be new wineries every day.  I looked over the list of wineries having events for Harvest Weekend and noticed several new names.  Maybe someone has tasted their wines and can give me some feedback.  but they are places I want to try and visit Harvest Weekend.

Chili:  Last weekend was the annual Creston Chili Cook-off.  I wasn't able to attend,  but I thank the Tribune for publishing the following winning recipe from last year..  .
4 Pasilla Chilies, diced
6 Jalapenos, diced
3 Medium Onions, diced
2 lbs Beef, Diced
1 lb Pork, Diced
2 Whole Green Onions
10 Cloves Garlic

Combine all ingredients in a Dutch oven, beginning with onions. Stack meats and then add the rest of the ingredients. Cook at low heat for 1-1/2 hours or until done.
    Enjoy!

Wine & Local Trivia:
So maybe this question isn't local other than love of good chili.  Chili has become an American favorite.  It actually has a fairly young history for such a popular American dish.  What city is considered the Chili capital of the world, Boasting the most chili served and most chili restaurants per capita.
  a) San Antonio
  b) Albuquerque
  c) Cincinnati
  d) Memphis

Paso Style Living Real Estate: (Real Estate market conditions in Paso Wine Country)
No one can escape the news on what's going in in Washington and Wall Street,  but I'm not sure everyone understands the impacts and issues that we're all facing.  There is the "Wall Street" view and then there is the "Main Street" view,  "Main Street" being the term used by the news media to describe average US citizens, "Joe Blow" trying to make a living and pay their his bills.
"Main Street" really didn't care when Bear Stearns, Lehman, and Merrill Lynch became "Wall Street" causalities.  No one had a checking account at these banks because they were "Wall Street" investment banks.  This past week "Main Street" is getting a different view. Real, banks where people have their deposits have been become the current causalities,  Washington Mutual and Wachovia.  Wachovia I find to be very interesting.  Wachovia recently acquired World Savings which was more of the major survivors of the "Saving and Loan" crisis of 20 years ago.  Now both are history.
So how do these issues affect all of us.  First,  most of our checking and saving accounts are safe up to $100,000 if they are in a FDIC bank,  but the problem really comes down to credit.  I'm constantly hearing complaints of no money.  Unless you've tried to borrow money to start a business,  build a home, build an office building, build an apartment, build a commercial building, or maybe buy a home you haven't seen the problem.  Interest rates are low,  but few people are willing to loan.  Even good projects with 40% LTV can't get funding.  The lack of credit is the primary factor we will be facing if our financial markets problem isn't corrected.  Is the "Bailout" the answer?  Who knows,  but doing nothing is not the answer.
