WINE NOTES(Local Wine and Real Estate News)

Cowboy Cosmopolitan

I personally love the Paso Lifestyle.  Cowboy Cosmopolitan is a term I coined about 10 years ago to represent the unique lifestyle of the Paso Robles area.  My lovely wife and I were having wine at Villa Creek and this "Cowboy" comes in, Complete with his cowboy hat,  jeans, belt buckle, and of course cowboy boots.  And, I will never forget hearing him order a Perrier!

As Wine Crush quickly approaches, Cowboy Cosmopolitan comes to mind again.  Paso Robles has been in transition over the past 10 years.  Ten years ago there were a few wineries,  but the Paso economy was much more dependent on Cattle.  Today the number of wineries had quadrupled and cattle production is down,  but the unique combination still has a charm which is our very own.   As the Mid State Fair winds down this next week we should all reflect on what we love about this area.  I hope Paso finally get's its recognition as the great wine area it is,  but we all need to keep that charm which is "Cowboy Cosmopolitan".

Real Estate Turnaround:

Have you all noticed the national press is starting to talk about Real Estate in a positive tone.  Real Estate has been the "Whipping Boy" of the economy up until recently.  Personally, my view is all of our problems have been caused by an out of control financial industry and Real Estate was the first victim.  The important thing now,  Real Estate does not make quick moves as a market segment,  but there is mounting evidence we are at the bottom or starting to rebound.

There are 2 key factors in the Real Estate market just like any other market, Price and Sales Volume.  Last month we discussed a key internal indicator,  Available Inventory.  Sales Volume has been rising over the past couple of months. This has been reported by the national press for many areas including California. The increased Sales Volume was driven by lowered prices.  We're now starting to see increased pricing.  The Median and Average prices are showing improvement is most local areas.  I know some of the local builders are starting to build again.  The important thing out of this,  prices are stabilizing, the market is returning to more normalcy,  and I think we'll see gradual price appreciation with some sputters.

Looking to the future, I see a shift in the types of homes built. Over the past 5 years homes were built bigger at the cost of quality.  "Bigger the Better".  We are going to see smaller homes built.  What was an average home built over the past five years of 2000 to 2300 square feet,  the average is going to shift to 1500 to 1700 square feet.  More energy efficient and I hope higher overall quality.

FOOD CORNER (Personal Recipes and Favorite Restaurants of the Paso Wine Country)

Salad Time

With the warm weather and so many "Pot Lucks" this summer, here's a tasty and also relatively healthy dish which is easy to make.  Green Pea Salad:
2 pkgs Frozen Petite Green Peas/td>
2 Eggs, hardboiled, chopped
1/4 cup Green Onion, Chopped
3/4 Cup Red Onion, Diced Fine
1 cup Cheddar Cheese, small cubes
3/4 cup Mayonnaise
1/4 cup Yogurt
1/2 cup Bacon Bits
1 canpimento, diced

Cook the Green Peas until done,  but still firm.  Quickly chill to stop the cooking process and drain.  In a large mixing bowl, add peas, onion, cheese, Mayonnaise, Yogurt, Pimento, and 3/4s of the egg.  Mix, carefully to not smash the peas.

Transfer to a serving bowl.  Sprinkle the remaining egg and bacon bits over the top,  Chill and Serve.
